Dear Au pair We are a British-Italian family living in North London. David is an architect and Margherita is a university lecturer currently on maternity leave. We have two daughters aged 3 years (Eva) and one month (Elena). As a family, we love hanging out with friends, playing in the garden, going to see art exhibitions, listening to music and going for walks in the nearby park. Eva is very friendly and loves role-playing, dressing up, drawing, watching films and looking after her dollies. Elena is still very small but we are keen to involve and stimulate her with language, music and games. We are looking for a candidate with the following essential characteristics, experience and skills: – Italian native speaker – Non smoker – Flexible, can-do attitude – Loving, empathetic approach to childcare – Very tidy – Organized and responsible – Creative, proactive, curious and positive The following experience is desirable: – Experience with newborn children – First-Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain one)
The Au Pair would be expected to work 30 hours per week and speak in Italian with Eva and Elena. She would look after the girls but she would also be expected to carry out light housekeeping tasks, such as loading and unloading the dishwasher, tidying up toys, occasional shopping, occasional cooking and running errands, such as bringing and collecting clothes from the drycleaners. Occasional evening babysitting might be arranged upon previous agreement. Indicative weekly schedule: 8:30 a.m. Help prepare Eva for nursery. Give her breakfast, wash her face, brush her teeth, dress her. 9:00 a.m. Bring Eva to nursery. 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Return home. Unload dishwasher. Look after Elena under Margherita’s supervision. Hold her, feed her, change her nappy, sing to her, play simple games. 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. FREE. 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Play with Eva, or give her a bath, or cook dinner. After play, tidy up toys with Eva. 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The family and au pair have dinner. Help tidy up the kitchen. Weekends: Mostly FREE unless previously agreed. Occasional evening or weekend babysitting will be required. Flexibility: Flexibility is key to the role, as it is possible the schedule might change slightly week by week. The employer will give the au pair prior warning if this happens. For instance, one morning might be swapped for an afternoon. Or occasionally, if David or Margherita are out for the evening, the au pair will be asked to help with the girls’ bed-time. General housework: We have a cleaning lady who comes regularly, so the amount of housework required – other than loading/unloading the dishwasher – is minimal. These tasks might be needed from time to time: – Load/unload washing machine and hang the washing. – Hand wash or remove stains from baby clothes. – Shopping for bread, milk or any other missing staples.
